Just like potty trainning, we must the trainning  with the children in primary schools .

I can understand your frustration, I have experienced these and many more, however, in some circumstances it is somewhat expected. Sanitary situations 'here' lend themselves to the fact that a local store in a America is constantly monitored and attended to, when the need arises. However, the experiences mentioned above, have occasionally (to my horror) reflected those of the experiences I have had 'here'. Sometimes I even wonder, am I better off behind a tree?
Perhaps signs depicting the instructions of how to use the facility would be more helpful?
In any case, these are just minor inconveniences, as we are not there on a 'toilet tour', but to reunite with family and friends. Thanks for the read.

Dear  Madam,
I agree  with  you.
But,  urban planning  is  never   done  for hoipolloi!

One  may  get  data  or  official  figures  about  any  scheme  but  we  all  know  the  defacto  situation!
Why  can't  adequate  number  of  Public washrooms  be  provided  in  each  nook of  our  nation!
Then.health  workers  hardly  provide  adequate  information  to  slum dwellers  about  sanitary  practices.
warm  regards,
yours,

Hi Ayer, A very interesting write-up touching on a most vital need for our country - sanitation and cleanliness in loo's!! It is very appalling to see filth in various forms around public bathrooms.  I agree with you this aspect should be taught at school along with awareness of various germs lingering in unclean toilets and surrounding areas.

Hi Ayer

Whole heartedly agree with you
It is an issue that often gets 'flushed' over to use a relevant pun
But we cant ever claim to be a developed nation if these basics are not in place at a facility and an individual level

Great post

Cheers

most educated people from well do to families wont lift seat while urinating they do it on the seat and all over and expect you to use it after that.

Ayer,

Brilliant piece of writing! In fact, the best I've read in a long long time

I totally agree with you...we as a people lack civic sense. The sense of ownership as far as public properties go...is zilch...which explains the vandalism all around.

My experience at the Mumbai airport was slightly better...mebbe it was one of the good days. However, the public faciities all over the city are olfactory driven GPS as you've rightly said!

Let's hope that future generations have civic sense inculcated at a very young age.

Is it something to do with the missing ownership of our public places? We might have become an independent nation way back in 1947 but nationhood is yet at a very nascent stage amongst most of our citizenry. Nowadays, this is further getting diluted with the advent of consumerism. The dichotomy in behaviour between private and public toilets implies that what is a good practice in toilet management is already known to us. Anyhow, a very conscience rattling piece and taking a cue from your end recommendation, I would suggest to make it as practicals carrying about 25 marks (out of 100) in 'Environmental Education' paper right from school level.
